Rescuing an animal should not place the rescuer at undo risk. The Technical Animal Rescue (T.A.R) course is an intensive three-day, hands-on course that teaches how to rescue an animal without becoming a victim. Participants will learn basics of incline rope and water rescue of people and animals. Knots, rigging, rope work and equipment for low angle rescue and techniques for working in flat or slow water will be demonstrated and practiced. All of this will be done while also learning how standard and specialized techniques can be used to rescue frightened, trapped or injured animals. This class is designed for animal control officers, humane officers, animal welfare workers, fire & rescue disaster workers, law enforcement officers, veterinary professionals and anyone who may be called to assist animals in trouble. This class is certified through Rescue 3 International and taught by certified instructors.
For those individuals that want to participate in the T.A.R class, there are several required items:
- Personal flotation device (P.F.D.)
- Full wet suit or dry suit
- Thick-soled water booties or sneakers
- Water or climbing helmet (this must cover the back of the head and drain water)
- Heavy/sturdy gloves for climbing
- Hiking boots
The P.F.D., wet/dry suit, and helmet can be rented from Code 3 for $30 a day (needed for two days). We have limited quantities, so call in advance to reserve your needed items. However we recommend if an individual is earnest in their desire to be in the rescue field that they invest in his or her own equipment. Code 3 Associates are glad to recommend items that we find to be of high quality and durable in the field. Individuals are responsible for acquiring the required items before the day of the class or making arrangements with Code 3.
